Course Delivery

The Cambridge CELTA course is made up of a minimum of 120 contact hours. On the course you will:

  • attend input sessions covering all aspects of teaching English as a second language
  • benefit from guided lesson planning and tutorial support
  • complete six hours of assessed teaching practice
  • receive constructive feedback on your teaching practice from your tutors and peers
  • complete four assessed assignments (750–1,000 words each)
  • have the opportunity to observe experienced ELT professionals (six hours in total).

  • Approaches and Techniques for Teaching English and Developing Language Skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing
  • Focus on Learners and the Teaching and Learning Context
  • Analysis of Language for Teaching Purposes
  • Classroom Management Techniques
  • Planning for Effective English Language Lessons
  • Best Practices for Selecting Materials & Resources
  • Structured Teaching Practice with Tutor Feedback
  • Observations of Experienced Teachers and Peers
  • Continuing Professional Development
  • A CELTA Portfolio Containing: Lesson Plans/Materials, Personal Reflections, Tutor Feedback, and the 4 Course Assignments.

Course Assessment

There is no final written exam, but you will be assessed on:

  • lesson planning and teaching
  • ability to apply what you learn in the classroom
  • awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of your teaching
  • contribution to group input and feedback sessions
  • written assignments.
